Does Hip Hop Music Celebrate and Promote Violence?

From Run D-M-C to 50 cent, Hip-Hop has evolved through time. I personally think hip-hop creates violence, but what do you think? Does music really create violence? There are more love songs then bad So why doesn't all those mushy love songs create too much love in the world? Why isn't there more love in the world with all those love songs? Too many people, hip-hop relates to what they have done Every rapper has their own swag, and rap different. When someone says the words "hip-hop", guns, girls, money pop up into my mind, why not flowers, or angels. It has been said Hip- Hop creates violence and it has been argued by many people.

One might say that not all rappers rap about the same 'guns, violence, money, girls, & drugs'. Rappers like Lupe Fiasco talk about their life in a way which doesn't require swearing (you can click HERE to see a list of all Lupe Fiascos songs and lyrics) Take an example from 50 Cent, one of the most popular gangster rappers out today. His debut album, “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” was the No. 1 album of the year for 2003. One of his first singles from this album, titled “In Da Club,” was a huge hit. You couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing this track’s harsh beat and 50 Cent’s stern voice rapping over the microphone. But what was he saying? The chorus goes like this:

You can find me in the club, bottle full of bub / Look mami I got the X if you into taking drugs / I'm into having sex, I ain't into making love / So come give me a hug if you into getting rubbed.
The music industry needs to stop glamorizing gangster rap and using it as their own personal marketing ploy before Hip-hop loses all credibility as an art and culture – a trend that is becoming more and more of a reality.

Gangster rap influences not just music preferences for today’s generation, but it also influences fashion, attitudes, and perceptions. Everywhere you look you see or hear the influence of Hip-hop on our generation. Just today I was watching television and I saw two Old Navy commercials that made references to Hip-hop. The first one featured Fran Drescher playing the role of a telephone operator. Towards the end of the commercial she says, “My shizzle’s gone fazizzle!” This is a spin off of rapper Snoop Dogg’s lingo. The second Old Navy commercial had cast rapper Lil’ Kim. She rapped about Old Navy, and at the end she says, “Now you’re in da hood.”

Not only is Hip-hop used in advertisements to sell clothes, but Hip-hop artists and Hip-hop record labels also market dangerous products to youth. For example, Roc-a-Fella Records has experienced great success with their Roc-a-Wear clothing line, and just recently the label has purchased Armadale, a “premium” vodka brand from Scotland. As reported by Fox News in “Hip-Hop Label’s Foray Into Vodka Business Stirs Controversy,” CEO of Roc-a-Fella, Damon Dash, tells the Wall Street Journal that Roc-a-Fella artists are not required to plug the liquor, but they will be “encouraged” to do so. Dash is aware, but unconcerned of the power Roc-a-Fella artists have over their audience in selling products through their music; in fact, he states that he was “inspired to make the deal after he noticed the buzz created by Jay-Z’s mention of Belvedere vodka in one of his songs” (Lehner). It’s one thing to market fashion through Hip-hop, but it’s another thing to promote negative lifestyles and bad choices to a segment of the population that is primarily underage.

When did music stop being an art and become a business? Hip-hop used to be about keeping kids off the streets, used to channel their energy into positive pastimes to keep them from becoming involved with gangs. It promoted positive and peaceful messages through intelligently written rhymes. It used to be cool to use a dictionary to write rhymes and rap about science and political issues. But now that gangster rap has become mainstream, kids don’t want to hear anything that doesn’t mention pimpin’, hoein’, drinkin’ forties, or smokin’ blunts. The media has fused Hip-hop and gangster rap, but what many people are unaware of is that there is another side to Hip-hop – typically called underground Hip-hop. The underground is where Hip-hop thrives, but it can be very secretive. Hip-hop is compiled of four elements: Break dancing, DJing, Aerosol Art aka Graffiti, and MCing. Gangster rap is a form of MCing, which is only one-fourth of Hip-hop - definitely not enough to define what Hip-hop is. Still, the corporate media glamorizes gangster rap and uses it as a marketing tool to sell products, then labels them “Hip-hop.” In today’s society, Hip-hop has become extremely marketable and is used to sell everything from sneakers to liquor to dolls. I’m waiting for the day that a song written about Bacardi liquor – paid for by Bacardi – makes it on Billboard’s Top 10 list. It may not be long. The music industry glamorizes gangster rap while exploiting Hip-hop to make a profit, and change needs to happen fast.

In contrast, the rate of gang activity and violence has risen over the last few years. According to recent youth violence statistics done by the Josphson Institute:
· Large cities claim that 72% of their school violence is attributable to gang activity.
· Between 1986 and 1992, the total number of children killed by firearms
rose by 144 percent.
· From 1985 to 1993, murders committed by people over age 25 dropped 20 percent; but they increased 65 percent among 18- to 24-year-olds and increased 165 percent among 14- to 17-year-olds.

A study by Henry Adaso, About.com Guide to Rap/hip hop, posted a poll and got these results from people around Canada:

What are your thoughts on the oft-talked about relationship between hip-hop and violence? Is hip-hop responsible for violence? No, hip-hop is not responsible for violence ----- 1079 people / 48%
Hip-hop contributes to violence a bit----- 559 people / 24%
Hip-hop and violence go hand in hand-----316 people / 14%
Parents are responsible for hip-hop related violence-----75 people / 3%
Hip-hop is just another word for violence-----172people / 7%
I don't know-----42 people / 1%

Last thought: Children are among the most highly victimized segments of the population with about 1 in 3 youth reporting being victimized through either direct or indirect exposure to violence or neglect. Youth usually experience violence within the home, school or neighborhood and it is often influenced by friends or family members. So does this prove that hip-hop/rap videos are creating violence for youths?

I do believe that hip-hop does somewhat promote and celebrate violence. Not all of it does though, so with this style of music it really depends on the musician. People such as 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Eminem, do promote violence because in their songs it's almost like they're bragging about it and saying how cool it is. But for artists such as Lupe Fiasco, he doesn't promote violence, and he actually raps sometimes about meaningful things. So really, it all depends on which artist you're listening to.

I beleive it does, 50 cent talks so highly about the fact that he was shot many times. Making him looking big and tough. He has younger teens listening to this and they'll fallow his horrible example.

Alot of rappers rap about their lifestyles which usually includes violence. I think it does glorify violence but it also promotes a lifestyle. Rappers like 50 cent or the game show their fans that violence is cool.

50 cent totally goes overboard with his songs and how he promotes violence in them. i obviously think that wrong because not many want violence. Peace and Love!
But there are some artists that dont like T-pain or Flo'rida or even Diddy.
But now a days like Mr. PUley said one day (or at least i think it was him ) "People don't listen to the music with their ears but with their eyes"
i think thats a good point cuz its so true...it more of the videos we see now of his glorifing life.

I agree with everyone elses comments yes i think alot of rappers these days promote too much violence but thats when its your job as the watcher of these music video's to think that they are getting paid to say exactly what they are, these rappers know what will sell and what wont and in todays day n age when violence gains so much attention like Jackass and others these people are doing it to get paid and thats what they are doing

Anonymous said...

I actually don't think I've ever heard a rap song promoting love and peace. That would honestly be a new kind of rap. Though I doubt it would sell.
and I totally agree with Sonya, 50 goes wayy over the top, and he has younger listeners, whats that telling them? " Hey kids, go get shoot and you'll be famous!" Nice life.

Well, I think it does promote violence, but it really depends on the person listening to the songs. Some people are influenced easier than others are. I agree with Kayce. There are some people that promote it all the time and there are others that rap about other things. It's the rappers that continuously talk about guns and violence that are the problem.

I don't agree with Taylor. Not everyone thinks about why the rappers are rapping about violence. Yes, violence does get a lot of attention, but it causes huge issues. I'd like to see more rappers that rap about other things. Even rap in video games talk about violence! Check out here. It's from a Sonic video game, one that's rated E, meaning 6+. It doesn't seem like very good lyrics for younger kids.

Hiphop as the culture is more oriented around poverty then anything else. Almost all rappers have music videos of themselves in the ghetto even rappers that don't rap about violence like Birdman or Mannie fresh. I think the reason all music is oriented around the concept of violence and money is because that life style exists in the ghettos, it was everything they were expected to be. Old school rap set the foundation for today's hiphop. Snoop's cousin Coolio had one of the biggest and well known songs in the world " Gangsters Paradise". But the violence in those videos makes violence in those ghettos heard. If they didn't promote violence who would know that many young children die in poor areas and would receive no help. It was used more to educate people then to promote violence.i disagree with Jane i think everything has two sides. There is many songs that promote love in rap just when a issue is brought everyone looks at the negative side right away.
Love songs by rap artists
-Akon dont matter
-Wyclef Jean featuring Akon, Lil Wayne, and Niia-Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)
-Tupac unconditional love
-cuban link sugar daddy
-Akon-Sorry,Put The Blame On Me

I think rap brings different point of view on life. It tends to highlight problems within todays society. If rap didn't exist , how would we know of these problems. Would we actually do something or look the other way and let people kill each other ?
" instead of a war on poverty, cops have a war on drugs so the police can bother me" I think people don't understand because they are not use to living in poor situations. People tend to say why don't they get a job instead of sell drugs? Low income areas have very little job opportunity thats why everyone is poor not because they want to. Once drugs are brought within a poor area there tends to be alot of usage and the education rates depreciate. Usually the worst areas have the worst everything , from teachers to police. But in all end drugs violence is a form of survival in poor areas. Could you really judge a person starving for days and selling drugs to eat? If we are the land of the free and have everything why are we starving . Hamilton's youth poverty rate is 35 percent. Everyone blames media because its the easiest thing to look to , people don't want to realize the truth because its easier to blame something and get it over with.If a person intended to do a violent crime he or she will do it, its not like he or she listens to Tupac and says "hmmmm its a good idea to shoot police officers maybe i should try it"Different values are being represented and songs are being written by what matters to the writers. I seen German , French, Serbian rap all about the same thing and all of them deviated around poor areas. How can someone judge something they never experienced ?

wow ! i think mico's comment was great but i'd still ahev to disagree.

now, i wouldn't go as far as saying that it promotes violence, but it definitely celebrates it.. to say the least.

hip hop culture is ALL ABOUT violence. it's great that they're getting their culture out there and educating everyone about it.. but in order to show someone your culture you have to celebrate it. i'm not saying their history and culture is wrong or anything, but bringing their culture into the "american dream" culture obviously clashes =\.

To Jane's comment, i can only think of one rap song at the top of my head that is about "love and peace" and all that other stuff--where is the love? by B.E.P. and ...yah that's pretty mucht the only one i can think of.

I personally think that yes, hip hop can promote violence in some cases and it definetly does celebrate it.

Some people are influenced by 50 cent and other rappers alike and start talking like them and dressing like them which i think is ridiculous. I think hip hop created the whole "wigger" title where white guys dress in baggy clothes and think they're awsome...when really...it looks dumb. 50 cent is shown as tough, confident, etc and some people actually do idolize him...for some reason.

Eminem's songs are pretty brutal, I listen to the odd one or two, but some..the lyrics are horrible. like his song "kim" :

"So now they both dead and you slash your own throat
So now it's double homicide and suicide with no note"

--like ...what?? those are some phycho lyrics...i personally wouldn't enjoy listening to that on a regular basis.

The lyrics in some hip hop songs should be taken down a notch because what do people think when they hear that? Some may be like me and think it's over the top, but others may be influenced with it and relate to it, and when people can relate to lyrics like that, that's scary.

RhinoGearz said...

Mica's post is pretty good, but I disagree. Those are just a few songs about love. The majority of rap songs are about violence. That's the problem. I doubt that most people would go out and attack a police officer, but I know that some people will. They start listening to negative things police officers have done to these rappers and start becoming aggressive to the police. I don't think I've ever heard a positive song about police officers.

Anonymous said...

I also think Mico's post was awesome. I actually didn't even realize how many songs there are that promote love and not all of them are about violence.
Here are some more examples:
J-shin- if i fall in love
Jhevon Paris- Neva Eva and Human
Zion/Akon- I love the way she moves
t-pain- show you how
And there are many more.
But a large percentage of them are about violence. A lot more songs are about violence than love. And I agree with Kayce that people like 50 cent and Lloyd Banks are advertising violence because they think it's cool even though it definitely isn't. Hip Hop culture definitely focuses a lot on violence, like Tanja said, it's good to educate people but some people aren't just educated they are influenced too.

Also, violence in rap songs isn't the only issue. "Illicit drugs were mentioned in 63 percent of Rap songs." http://www.mediacampaign.org/publications/movies/movie_partII.html
Drugs and alcohol are also a problem in these rap songs, especially if there are younger children listening to them.

Today’s society around the world has become very brutal many people blame it on the children of today’s society and their behaviours. But, they do not realize that their change in behaviour is due to the things around us, which promote such changes. For example, many people believe that hip/hop music promotes violence and teaches youths to react in various ways to specific situations. Yet, we do not realize that these hip hop artist sing about their violent lives and what they have been through in a different perspective then how we anticipate it. The youth audiences that encounter these types of songs usually intake it in a pessimistic manner and therefore, this results in criminal activity as we see broadcasted over various news channels. However, one artist which I have come across that strictly promotes violence is “50 Cent,” this certain individual as we hear in his commanding lyrics link directly to promoting violence. Have you ever asked yourself the question, why does 50 Cent wear a bullet proof vest? We certain individuals do not realize that this hip hop artist is always seen in this bullet proof vest for a couple reasons only, perhaps his life is endangered, or he is involved in some type of criminal activity.

Anonymous said...

After viewing the various comments left, I totally support Kayce and Jane about their views on 50 Cent, this certain individual uses violence in an unenthusiastic manner. As I have watched several of 50 cent’s music videos everything starts from violence to drugs which then link to sexual exploitation. As we watch other music videos of assorted genres, every singer has a different way of presenting themselves to the audience, and personally I believe that 50 Cent does not have the ability to do so.

Matt Dean said...

I also like Mico's post it brings out both sides of the perspective. i have a personal experience where in elementary school everyone was listening to rap in grade 4 and upwards but i wasn't allowed to listen to it except when i was at my friends house an my parents didn't know they thought it talked to much about violence and drugs and sex. i didn't care and still don't. but i do find that there is usually allot of anger and promotion or glorifying of violence and glorification of drugs. if they were to possibly tone it down a little bit then there wouldn't be much controversy over this topic. but there are artists that do rap and don't promote violence..(can't think of any off the top of my head right now).

Harinder said...

I honestly believe hip-hop definitely has some affect on a majority of people in our society today. However I also believe it all depends on the type of artist you listen to, and the way you relate yourself to it. Most hip-hop artists rap about their past experiences and try to express their feelings throughout music and rhythm. For example Tupac Shakur talks about the changes he went though in his life from early ages to mid-age in his song changes. Another example from Tupac is the song Dear Mama, where he talks about his mother. Some people in society these days do not actually sit there and listen to the real meaning of the song. Although there is violence, most hip-hop artists do not try to promote violence it is just the way the audience interprets it. Reality is that hip-hop artists just write about their past experience with no intention of creating violence in our society.
Misogyny is sexism, racism, and anti-Semitism. In the hip-hop video “Tip Drill” by Nelly, it shows that according to some hip-hop artists, woman can be sold and bought. Hip Hop has a lot of artists that show themselves as the “man”. The importance of being a man is one of the things that most viewers see in hip-hop artist videos. Men get a powerful and important image, whereas women are shown as if they do not have a value and are just eye candy.

I do think that Hip hop music does somewhat promotes violence; definitely not all hip hop music because like Harinder said, Tupac's music doesn't really promote violence as his music is more what he's gone through. Also, like Mico said, there's hip hop out there that “promote love.”

However, I think ppl like 50 cent do somewhat celebrate violence. Through his music, I think he does sort of glorify the fact that he's been shot so many times, like Jane said. And because nowadays, hip hop is so cool and guys are supposed to be all tough, many people find that being shot is a hip thing. Also, a few years ago, Canada's junior foreign minister Dan McTeague tried to ban 50 cent from coming for his concert in Canada because he said that 50 cent glorified gun crime. Read more at this website: http://www.hecklerspray.com/ban-50-cent-says-canada/20051668.php

Also his songs have “titles like I’m Supposed To Die Tonight and The Good Die Young, so what's that supposed to mean? People who practically worship 50 cent might actually take things like this to heart. However, “people were for a while suggesting that the violent imagery in 50 Cent’s movie caused a fatal shooting that happened at a screening of his movie.” http://www.hecklerspray.com/ban-50-cent-says-canada/20051668.php
Now that I cannot believe. Rappers like 50 cent might “celebrate” and “promote” violence, but in no way can you directly blame “violent imagery in a movie” to “cause” anything as serious as a shooting.

Mico is totally right when he talks about violence in music videos just being a way to let ppl know about what really goes on in ghettos, etc. and that's where it came from. But nowadays hip hop is used to sell. Like Noori said in his post, “In today’s society, Hip-hop has become extremely marketable and is used to sell everything from sneakers to liquor to dolls “ Noori also mentions how hip hop is being used to sell “dangerous products to youth.” So, I think hip hop artists aren't the only ones to blame.

Also, on this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_Cent#Controversy
I found this, "“On July 21, 2007, 50 Cent filed a US$1 million lawsuit against advertising company Traffix Inc. of Pearl River, New York for using his image in a promotion which he says threatens his safety. He learned about the internet ad after one of his staff members saw it on a MySpace page. According to court documents, the ad features a cartoon image of the rapper and the message: "shoot the rapper and you will win $5000 or five ring tones guaranteed". Though the ad did not use his name, the image allegedly intended to resemble him, suggesting he endorsed the ad. The lawsuit calls it a "vile, tasteless and despicable" use of 50 Cent's image that "quite literally calls for violence against him.””

So once again, an artist with an image of violence being "used" to sell, which isn't the artist's fault.

lessinbeen said...

I personally don't listen to that stuff but I do believe they promote violence, has anyone ever heard Eminem's song Criminal? I swear that song makes me rampage, but only due to outrage...umm...not violent rampage, more like "that guy sucks" type thing...just to be different....yes. Ok in short, yes SOME hip-hop and rap does promote violence. Of course society is numbing itself so does it matter?
(um...YES. violence is...lame.)

lessinbeen said...

and also, just because they're using it to "sell" doesn't mean s*** all, because the thoughts, feelings and finally words had to come from somewhere and they DO influence.

[EXAMPLE OF MUSICAL INFLUENCE:anyone see what i looked like last year?....can you say marilyn manson and jack off jill?
that's hardcore influence before i grew the hell up.]

Generic Viagra (sildenafil citrate; brand names include: Aphrodil / Edegra / Erasmo / Penegra / Revatio / Supra / Zwagra) is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction regardless of the cause or duration of the problem or the age of the patient.
Sildenafil Citrate is the active ingredient used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. It can help men who have erectile dysfunction get and sustain an erection when they are sexually excited.
Generic Viagra is manufactured in accordance with World Health Organization standards and guidelines (WHO-GMP). Also you can find on our sites.
Generic legal buy viagra online is made with thorough reverse engineering for the sildenafil citrate molecule - a totally different process of making sildenafil and its reaction. That is why it takes effect in 15 minutes compared to other drugs which take 30-40 minutes to take effect.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.

Not sure where to post this but I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of National Clicks?

Can someone help me find it?

Overheard some co-workers talking about it all week but didn't have time to ask so I thought I would post it here to see if someone could help me out.

Seems to be getting alot of buzz right now.

Thanks
